Are you directing a blockbuster?
In work and life, in healthy eating and indulgence, in working towards our goals and taking time off. Balance is the Holy Grail of contentment that we always seem to be chasing. But are we actually getting it right or are we fooling ourselves?
When your balance is out – physically, emotionally or spiritually – it becomes difficult to focus and get anything done. Life becomes more difficult to navigate and we end up stumbling all over the place, bruised and confused. We might be treading water but we’re not actually going anywhere and pretty soon, we’re going to get tired.
Emotional and spiritual balance is something I’ve been battling with recently. I felt like I was on a rollercoaster. One minute I thought I had it all figured out and then life arrives with her basket of lemons and throws everything off centre again. It’s not a comfortable space to be in and it reminded me of the past, when I went into something with an “all or nothing attitude”. I’d either work out like mad and become fanatical about training and then forget to enjoy the simpler things in life, like a glass of wine with dinner. Or I wouldn’t exercise at all and turn into a domestic goddess, cooking and eating up a storm and not giving much thought to my physical health. In relationships, I’d put my partner on a pedestal and forget about myself in the process.
I’ve learnt now that balance in relationships means that both parties need to be valued and respected. Balance in health means setting goals and planning how to achieve them but also allowing ourselves to fall off the wagon occasionally.
The concept of balance is a great one but it’s not at all easy to achieve. It takes work to create equilibrium in our lives, especially since our centre of gravity is always shifting. Think of yourself as a ship in a stormy ocean. You never know when the next wave is going to knock you off course and force you to change directions to steer yourself to safety.
Here’s why I think it’s so difficult to get it right: because we have the ability to change things but we often lack the courage. No one is forcing us to stay in jobs or relationships that make us miserable. Yet we do. We choose to stay because it’s familiar and because change is uncomfortable. But what if you were forced to take a step back and reassess whatever it is that’s affecting your balance. Do you respect yourself enough to set new boundaries, to change the things you can and to take the first, shaky step?
Even if you love your job – like I do – we all need to take some time to recharge our batteries. This weekend, after a long cycle, I spent some time with an old friend and soaked up the sun with my 12-year-old. Sure, I had work to do and marketing to attend to and newsletters to write but I needed to take the time to refocus and find my centre again.
Now it’s your turn.
